Do you Raku?
Raku is an exciting process that includes taking glazed ceramics out of the kiln while they are glowing red hot and placing them in a combustible material. This technique starves the glaze of oxygen and creates a variety of colors, while unglazed surfaces turn black matte. Although Raku pieces are non-food safe, each one is unique can never be duplicated.
So why Raku – because you can and it’s super fun! This wild workshop is an opportunity for our Teen Wheel students to participate in a Raku firing.
Workshop Prep:
On the last day of Teen Wheel Class, students will get the opportunity to throw with Raku clay.** Participants can fire (2) Raku pieces no larger than 12” tall x 5” wide with even walls to prevent cracking. Simple forms are encouraged because the firing process can be rough on attachments. All pieces will be bisque fired and stored at QCC for the workshop.
Workshop Schedule:
During the workshop, teens will glaze their pieces with our Raku glazes, learn how to use wax and tape resist to create designs and participate in the raku process. All Raku pieces will be available to take home after the firing.
Required: Closed toe shoes, long pants and sleeves, no synthetic clothing.
Registration includes:
Workshop Minimum: 4 participants
Workshop Maximum: 8 participants
**Previous Teen Wheel students may participate in this workshop. Please email Jess to schedule a day to make your pieces with Raku clay (extra class price $30).
