Cone 6 oxidation: Dark Magma is a charcoal-colored, high-texture glaze that creates a rough, cratered surface. The thicker the application, the more textured the surface will be.
Cone 10 reduction: Texture slightly flattens. No change in color.
Tips: Magma was developed to create a rough, cratered surface. The thicker the application, the more textured the surface will be. Magma can be directly applied to bisqueware or in combination with other mid-range glazes. The amount of dimension and cratering created with these glazes is directly a result of how thick the glaze is applied. A thinner application will produce a less dimensional surface with minimal cratering. It will have more of a sandpaper feel. A thicker application will produce a more dimensional and cratered surface.
Not Dinnerware Safe: Not recommended for dinnerware as the fired finish is either not chemically durable or has surface characteristics that could potentially trap bacteria. Recommended for the outside of a dinnerware piece, below the lip line or for ornamental use only.
Mayco’s line of Stoneware Glazes are available in a beautiful array of colors, tints and tones. These glazes were developed to perform from mid-range (cone 5/6) to higher fire (cone 9/10) temperatures. Stoneware classic glazes offer the depth, sophistication and reliability to artists working from mid-range to high-fire temperatures. Many glazes will break over textures, revealing secondary colors and shades. Used alone, stoneware glazes produce beautiful color variations. One coat will allow the clay body to show through the glaze and two to three coats deeper the color. The choice of clay body, thickness of glaze application, firing process and temperature will affect the fired finish--we recommend that glazes always be tested on your clay body.
Mayco’s Stoneware Glazes are Food Safe, Non Toxic and Non Hazardous when used according to manufacturer's directions.
